β-lactamase producing enterobacteria isolated from surveillance swabs of patients in a cardiac intensive care unit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil BJID
Vasques,Marcia Regina G; Bello,Alexandre Ribeiro; Lamas,Cristiane da Cruz; Correa,Juarez; Pereira,José Augusto Adler.
There is a high incidence of infections caused by betalactamase-producing Gram-negative microorganisms in Brazil. These organisms are of clinical and epidemiological importance, since their mobile genetic elements facilitate cross-infection. The present study was conducted in sentinel rectal swabs from patients admitted to a cardiac surgery hospital in Rio de Janeiro, from January through December 2007, in a consecutive manner. The aim of the study was to characterize the genotype and phenotype of these isolates from colonized patients. Biochemical tests, antimicrobial susceptibility tests, a confirmatory test for the expression of extended spectrum betalactamase (ESBL) production and polymerase chain reaction for the blaTEM, blaSHV, CTX-M1, Toho-1 and...

ABSTRACT The present study evaluated the antimicrobial susceptibility profile, β-lactamase production, and genetic diversity of Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter spp. using phenotypic identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and β-lactamase phenotypic detection. Isolates were obtained from patients in an intensive care unit in a hospital in southern Brazil. Bacterial genomic DNA was extracted, followed by the genotypic detection of carbapenemases and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus-polymerase chain reaction (ERIC-PCR). Fifty-six isolates (26 Klebsiella pneumoniae, five Escherichia coli, three Enterobacter aerogenes, nine P. aeruginosa, and 13 Acinetobacter spp.) were evaluated. The phenotypic...

β-mannanase and mannan oligosaccharides in broiler chicken feed Ciência Rural
Barros,Victor Ramos Sales Mendes de; Lana,Geraldo Roberto Quintão; Lana,Sandra Roselí Valerio; Lana,Ângela Maria Quintão; Cunha,Fabio Sales Albuquerque; Neto,João Virgínio Emerenciano.
The study aimed to evaluate the use of β-mannanase and mannan oligosaccharides (MOS) to replace growth promoters in broiler diets. Four hundred male Cobb broiler chicks were used, with initial weight of 45±1g, distributed in a completely randomized design with five treatments and eight repetitions of ten birds. The treatments were: basal feed; basal feed without growth promoter; basal feed without growth promoter + β-mannanase; basal feed without growth promoter + MOS; and basal feed without growth promoter + β-mannanase + MOS. The feed intake of the birds increased in response to dietary treatments compared to basal diet during the period 1-21 days of age. A higher weight gain and improved feed conversion was found at 42 days of age among birds that had...

Oliveira,Karen Maciel de; Binda,Nancy Scardua; Lavor,Mário Sérgio Lima; Silva,Carla Maria Osório; Rosado,Isabel Rodrigues; Taguchi,Tatiana Malagoli; Alves,Endrigo Gabellini Leonel; Melo,Marília Martins; Gomez,Marcus Vinícius; Melo,Eliane Gonçalves de.
This study aimed to investigate the neuroprotective effect of ω-conotoxin MVIIA (MVIIA) intralesional application in rats submitted to spinal cord injury. Male Wistar rats, weighing 300g±23.4, were distributed in five groups: negative control (SHAM), placebo (PLA), 5μM MVIIA, 10μM MVIIA and 20μM MVIIA MVIIA. After laminectomy of the 12th thoracic vertebra (SHAM), the PLA, 5μM MVIIA, 10μM MVIIA and 20μM MVIIA groups were subjected to acute compressive spinal cord trauma for five minutes, and then five minutes later, the animals received specific treatment in a standard total volume of 2µL, by intralesional route, using sterile PBS as placebo. Locomotor activity was assayed using Basso Beattie Bresnahan (BBB) scale to show the patterning of SCI. With 48...
